Mulching Tree and Shrub Beds

As spring approaches, it’s time to start thinking about mulching your tree and shrub beds. The best time to start mulching in Manitoba is in late April or early to mid May; when the soil is warming up.

Mulching you tree and shrub beds is a quick and easy way to make any yard more attractive while adding numerous benefits to your plants and soil.

Weed Control

The use of mulch helps inhibit weed germination, slowing the development of weeds by preventing sunlight from reaching the soil surface.  Weed seeds germinate quickly in a garden bed without an ample cover of mulch.

Improves Water Retention

Mulch reduces water loss from the soil surface, which helps maintain soil moisture and protects your plants from drying out in the summer months. It can also help reduce soil erosion during Spring thaw and heavy rains.

Moderates Temperature Fluctuations

Mulch can moderate your soil and plants temperature, protecting your plants roots from heat damage as well as frost and cold damage. Mulch acts as an insulator, keeping the soil warm on cold nights and cool on hot days.

Adds Vital Nutrients

Mulch, when done correctly, returns nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus as well as a host of other nutrients to the soil, along with essential soil microbes. These are all vital to healthy plant growth.

Enhances Curb Appeal

Mulch dramatically enhances the look of your property by making your plants pop and creating a beautiful contrast between your turf and your tree and shrub beds.

At Lawn Stylists, we use a natural wood mulch that is a natural tan or brown in colour and is completely free of additives or dyes. This makes it completely safe for your soil, plants, pets, and children.

We recommend that mulch be applied in a 2-3-inch layer throughout the garden bed and re-applied every 1-2 years; any thicker and it makes it difficult for oxygen  and moisture to reach the soil and as a result, your plants could suffer.

If you’re looking to breathe new life into your gardens this spring, mulch is one of your best solutions.
